A SUPPORTING ROLE

The stage now empty
Curtain down
An eerie quiet
Whispers sound
Each footfall
That tread the boards
Ghostly in
The lonely halls.

The dressing room
Removes the paint
From a haggard face
Its age revealed
The actor who
Not quite a hit
Supporting roles
Did comfortably fit.

The mirror looks
Deep to his soul
Years seem lost
His ambition old
One night finished
Soon another arrives
The bright lights shine
But not his eyes.
