Have you ever asked a kid
What true love really is?
No prior knowledge or context
And definitely no priss?
I imagine they’d say
True love is when mommy gives dada the last piece of chicken
And I am sure one will say
Love is when you give someone candy and you don’t ask for it
Or…or maybe
True love is when my dog licks my face in the morning
Or when he greets me when I come home after playing
Their definition is so unfiltered and pure
That I think one kid said
Love is when you have ice cream and you share your very last scoop
A little boy once said
Love is when grandma makes me cookies
Even is she doesn’t have teeth
Which set his grandma laughing and everyone else in tears
My niece said
Love is when you fall asleep and someone puts a blanket on you
And I don’t think I have heard it any better
Or anything more true
One kid said
Love is when you wrap a present
And don’t care if the tape is messy
And another one said
Love is when even if he get wet
Daddy holds the umbrella over me
And …
To see the world as clear as they do
