modern love

You are

Peering at me

Through glass

A screen

A phone call

The modern equivalent of

Love confessions on balconies

Handwritten poetry

On yellowing parchment

A courtship

A sweetheart

A hand in your own

We still hold hands

But FaceTime calls

Have taken over

So when the longing

Is taking over

I call you

And although I am well versed

In modern technology

It is a little strange

that I can see your face

And not feel an embrace

So naturally

I am slightly overwhelmed

Because you are there

But you are not

And it is so close

But it is not enough

It is not the same

I want to kiss

I want more than this

And I have never been good

At holding back tears

Ive been trying to improve

My poker face for years

But it isn’t for me

So they are dripping

Down my cheeks

You say
“I can see the stars
in your eyes
when you cry”
and immediately follow it up

With a sarcastic imitation of my voice
“that’s going in a poem”

Oh, Owen

How can you say

Something so profoundly poetic

When you are so far away

Only to eventually come back

And impulsively

Lick my face

How can you be

So romantic

And dramatic

When I am not there

To proclaim

My love

From the rooftops

Why

Are you not

With me

On the rooftops

We could be dancing

Prancing

Like star-crossed lovers

Obsessed with each other

I want you

More than I have ever wanted

Anything

And I know

How incredibly cliche

But you are smiling at me

At the tear tracks on my cheeks

Through a screen

All all I can think

All I can dream

Is you

Next to me.
