Four in the morning
you hear
the sparrows chirping.

At ten in the morning, too,
you can still hear
the sparrows chirping.

But

At ten in the morning,
the sound of cars,
the sound of horns—some single honks, some sustained blasts,
the sound of brakes—

you cannot help but hear them too.
