The Clock

The clock ticked, but no one listened.
It warned of the end, but everyone said it was a myth.
It held a very simple truth:
that you should hold everything dear and close.
But everyone passed it by as if it were nothing.

It ticked and ticked until it struck.
And when it did,
all time was up.

In the evening, all the town could hear
was someone weeping
for losing someone dear.

But the clock had warned them
of how they would feel.

So they piled the dirt upon the wood,
and a stone was placed that read,
\"Time must go on,\"

Even when someone dear is lost.

Yet no one listened
to the clock
that had ticked
for so many years.
