heat

We’re melting and

Not just from the gaze of each other

Although it is a factor

And the pavement is so warm

People are joking about frying eggs

And my body is so humid, worn

We drag two chairs outside

And sit in the street

For the tiniest breeze

A speaker

Borrowed after sweet-talking my brother

A playlist of our songs

Of course, no matter how much I shuffle

It keeps picking all of yours

But I cannot blame it

I would keep picking you too

The space in your lap is now

My designated footstool

This is not why I keep picking you

But it is a factor

My phone’s battery is a brave warrior

For seventeen percent lasted three hours

We blast juice, loud

And sing, no excuse

You may be in the middle of the street

But my darling, you must still serenade me

When the sky

Covers herself with a

Blanket of stars

I play my favourite

Love song

And you hold out your hands

I take the chance

To get up and dance

And all I can feel

Is your fingertips on my back

And your eyelashes against my nose

And your smile as people walk past

With a stare that clearly says

Why are you doing that?

It only makes it better

And I cannot help but laugh

And all I can see

When I pull my head back

Is you

Ignited

In the warmth of this

Special, summer night

Medicine for a heart that has been

Very much in fright

For quite some time

We are melting and

It is not just from the heat

Although it is a contributing factor

But I fear more for the warmth

That comes from your palms

Against my waist

What an intimate way

To spend the end of the day

I would not have it changed

You, my darling

I want you to stay.
