The Ghost of Our Friendship

I still remember how it felt to be so close to you.

We would laugh until we couldn’t breathe,

And share secrets in the dark.

The friendship we had felt warm and safe; we were like family.

We had jokes no one else understood,

And brought light to each other’s days.

Our friendship felt strong and unbreakable.

But even strong friendships can turn fragile.

It all happened so fast,

Somewhere between then and now,

Your smiles grew unnatural.

The words you once used to lift me,

Became stones you threw at me.

The distance between us felt so noticeable.

You changed,

You didn’t use to be like this.

It was your choice to split us apart,

Not mine.

Even though I know your reasons,

I wonder why you act as if the friendship we had was never there at all.

Not even a smile in the halls,

Not even a wave.

And yet,

Here I am- missing you still.

Not the rudeness,

Not the way you made me feel at the end.

But the laughter we shared.

The jokes we told,

I miss those most of all.

I will always carry both pieces now:

The hurt that lingers,

And the sweetness of the memories

Even your harsh words can’t erase.

It feels as though I’m grieving someone who’s still alive-

The friendship that lives only in the ghost of who we were.
