I was always told
I couldn\'t do anything right
I wish I could have found a way
To have disappeared into the night
The beatings would come whenever
He\'d been drinking at the bar
I\'m surprised that what he hit me with
Had never left a scar
Looking back I partially understand
It was all about discipline
I know if I hadn\'t had it
I wouldn\'t be where I am
When he passed away
I never shed one tear
It wasn\'t out of meanness
It was more out of fear
For I believed if he heard me crying
His thundering hand would fall from the sky
Once again I\'d feel the pain
That\'s why I didn\'t cry
My tears for him never fell
For that I have no regrets
I think back now and then
It\'s the pain not him I can\'t forget
I vowed when I had children
I\'d never do what he had done
I never forgot that vow
And never raised a hand to hit my son
