The Moon is a natural available clock, repeating its cycle every twenty-nine and a half days. This is short enough to remember what the world looked like one Moon previously.
At each new Moon, as Summer fades, people look once, and again, to see what had changed. How has the evidence accumulated? They look for colder winds, departing birds, heavier dew, changing leaves, leaf fall, the first frost.
The First Moon brings a sign.
The second adds another.
By the third, the signs begin to agree.
By the fourth, the transition is unmistakable.
Autumn arrives by accumulation — not at a sharp boundary, but as a cluster of changing signs.
Over many generations, in various cultures, people remembered these recurring sequences. They learned that one sign could predict another. They looked for how the signs accumulated as evidence: cooler weather, departing birds before frost arrived, frost before ice on ponds.

Different cultures combined these signs with cycles of the Moon, Sun, and Stars to measure the seasonal year and develop calendars.
Modern calendars give seasons sharp boundaries and fixed dates. Nature does not. Seasonal change is a transition, without a sharp boundary. Autumn may arrive earlier one year and later the next. We still notice this ourselves: an early frost, leaves yellowing sooner, birds departing earlier.
The calendar tells us when autumn should begin, based on averages.
The signs tell us when autumn is actually arriving, this year!
The Moon provides the measure.
Nature provides the signs.
Their accumulation reveals the seasonal change.
