Caveman

A simple lesson learned through grief

For 9 months we shared the same food and drink, for almost a year I was nurtured by what she ate.
For 16 years we shared the same dens guarded by her, it was my life she wanted to tend.
Somewhere within that time I stopped listening, her words fallen on deaf ears
Never did I think I would be responsible for so many tears.

In the years that followed I walked my own path, so selfish was I never looking back.
While I was searching for my place in this world, looking for a cave of my own
Hers came crashing down
And I left her in that den all alone

A few years later there was a loneliness she would speak of, a feeling I had not yet really known.
I had built a life and brought her in to share, in that time thinking I was showing real care. I’ve come to realize even then, she was kept in the far corners of my mind

She started to build a new, found a cave not too far from mine. We had planned to share that den, living together once again.

On the moon before, the eve of move in day
The universe took one breath, exhaling her name.
This land in which we all walk, she was no longer allowed to stay.

Several years later it felt like I had finally woken, that same loneliness she used to speak of
I walked around bearing that token.

Some wounds I do not think are meant to heal but lessons learned this way are far too real.
Such a simple thing I learned from this, now I show compassion to everyone because you never know when you will miss.
