I broke the skin with trembling teeth;
Sweet fire ran wild beneath.
I thought one taste would end the ache—
Instead, it taught my heart to wake.
You drew me close; the room grew small.
My pulse forgot its pace and all
The careful things I meant to say
Fell from my lips and slipped away.
Your mouth met mine. I lost the thread
Of every warning in my head.
Your hands were warm; my knees went weak.
I held you closer, cheek to cheek.
The fruit was sweeter than I’d guessed,
Its juice a bright stain on my chest.
You kissed the drop beside my chin,
And I forgot why we called it sin.
Come morning, walking took its time;
I couldn’t keep your grin from mine.
I caught my face in window glass—
That dazed look made me stop and laugh.
I’d thought the wanting might subside
Once I had held you through the night.
But when you reached for me again,
I wanted more than I did then.
