She was only ten, a tiny child back then, but still quite a scrapper
She\'d never back down, in shorts or gown, no one dared to slap her
It was late, when I took her to skate, on the rough side of town
The only white kid there, but she didn\'t care if others were black or brown
Took off her shoes, so not to lose she put under a bench what was her pride
She hit the rink but when returned her heart did sink, a little girl had her shoes by her side
She tried diplomacy first, but the bubble did burst, as the girl held them tighter
Under attack the girl\'s brother on her back, she showed them she was a fighter
Joining her brother came her father and mother, her extended family were here
Aunts, uncles and cousins came by the dozens yet in her eyes no fear
Like a pitbull pup I picked her up and with her shoes we ran away
Rocks thrown at the car, as I drove far to where it was safer to play
If you confuse which are your shoes don\'t fight with my kid
Now a beauty that\'s grown, chipped out of stone, she\'s a model that can black your eyelid
