June Dove

crush

one love, oddly enjoys the taste of her own blood

one lover whose sharpened talons dig deeper than she ever thought she could go.

one love clutching tight for survival,

without a care for her safety,

the warmth of embrace brings a comfort she\'s never known

as the warm crimson blood drips from her breast

and splatters to the floor below

her lips start to get cold

with dizzyness, the embrace feels less like a hug,

and more like a crushing maw

so she pushes away from the warmth

as she struggles for freedom

just to breathe

the panic sets into her body, she flails her clumsy limbs and wrenches her numb body free, slippery blood surges from the wounds in her chest

suddenly unrestrained, she slips

and falls

on this delicate bird

with the crunch of hollow bones,

her kin rejoice

as a horrible harpy is slain

so with lonely wails and cries as all the other birds fly by, she collects a feather to keep and she buries that beast where nobody can disturb

now she\'s stained with the blood she once loved to indulge in, with a flavor that tastes like a nightmare she lived

and all the other birds, with their soft, gentle talons, feel dull when she feels their embrace

and without her long and sharp claws, they can\'t fill the spaces, they can\'t reach the places the harpy once did

so a girl tastes her blood to remember

the warmth of a monster she loved
