counting money together
and laughing in private
feeding the Constitution
into a shredder
slow enough to sound like
applause
They train you
to hate your neighbor
over borders
different religions
and skin color
along with every
ist and ism imaginable
both sides push hatred
anything but the truth
as your rights are being erased
and you’re busy shouting
at each other
The media creates
ritual distractions
and hyperbolic headlines
to keep your eyes
off the ledger
Divide and conquer
isn’t a theory
in practice
it’s a maintenance
schedule
Every election a mirror maze
each debate a scripted seizure
every promise a sedative
slipped into the national drink

only the bird
