Whispered Nothings
I watched her through the doorway,
tears still wet against my eyes.
An old tension filled the hallway
like unfinished excuses and half-lies.
I almost said I’m sorry,
but pride held back my tongue.
Some men only understand the cost
once everything is done.
I found her ring this morning
pushed deep inside the drawer.
Strange how the word forever
doesn’t mean much anymore.
I thought that working harder
would somehow keep us strong.
Nights spent side by side
can still go quietly wrong.
I heard the bedroom door close
and could not make a sound.
She gathered what remained
of the life we’d built around.
She stood there for a moment,
tears still wet upon her face,
then turned and walked away from me
without a word, without a trace.
I wanted to reach and stop her,
to say that I had changed.
But the words arrived too late
and nothing stayed the same.
I finally said I’m sorry,
but she was already gone that day.
I held her ring and whispered
the words I failed to say.
