If I Can\'t Have It All

I came back alive, recovered, built this life alone, of it I am proud

I needed no one by my side, the wood is stacked, chickens fed, fields are plowed

But keeping an open mind and open heart if she came to me and took me higher, to myself I vowed

But I never saw this coming, you left me falling into the sky without a prayer

Lost in the sunset painted clouds, tell me am I crazy or did I feel you there?

To you and how you tripped me, there’s nothing in my past life I can compare

But she says that she doesn’t want anything more with me

I wanted more, but I’m still smiling if friends is all we’ll ever be

But I don’t think I have anymore inside, I think she tossed away the last key

So away, back inside I turn

There’s only one for whom I could ever yearn

But it’s not in pain, I already bled so much for this life, I will thrive in what I earn

I couldn’t imagine anyone else could, in this heart so cynical, untrusting, defeated, plant a seed

Closure is something I’m not sure I want, will never have, but I have no need

If it isn’t she who follows, I don’t want to lead

I live my life with unbothered joy, but ‘what could’ve been’ is a question that begs to be asked

Were there ever going to be a chance for me to love again, that surely felt like the last

How am I supposed to fall for anyone else when she’s a standard that cannot be surpassed?

Were it in my control, I wouldn’t have crashed like that, I wouldn’t have taken the fall

Because I’m happy with this life, I don’t need anyone to wake up beside, fight for or call

And If I can’t have it all, I’m happy with not having it at all
