A Soldiers Fate

As I sit here contemplating my life

Gun loaded just like a Dice

Enemy approaching like a blanket of destruction

Here I am covered in Fleas and Lice

Another sorry night spent in the trenches

More worry and more woe

Felling downhearted lonely and depressed

Not knowing whether the end will come or go

Must cheer up my comrades

All sat there dreaming of home

Not needing to be here

Not wanting to die alone

Suddenly, Cannon fire sails overhead

Now the fun has just begun

Lots more noise and destruction

At the rise of the Sun

Stay alert is the order

Hold fast, don’t give ground

I search for my tin helmet

Whilst I fire off another round

Then there’s that scream of horror

As a comrade has been hit

More blood and guts

Just somehow lands in out pit

All our families back waiting for news back home

Do not have the slightest idea

All the pain and the suffering

We soldiers are expected to endure

Officers are no different

All scared just the same

They just give the orders

Someone else is more to blame

The enemy advances

We have been told just to hold out

Bombs are falling all around us and exploding

All around and about

I realize I must have been hit

I feel a deep pain in my chest

I was spun around quite sharply

There is a rather large hole in my vest

A crimson tide starts flowing

My life it ebbs away

To die here is my destiny

What more can I say

As nightfall steadily approaches

My body is lying still

I will not see tomorrow

Dear God, they have broken my will

I do not want to live any longer

I just cannot stand the pain

Please close my eyes gently, Lord

As I lay dying in the muck and rain
