Subtly Thrilling Summer's Eve

(sonnet # CLXXX)

CLXXX

Fair summer's gloaming: crickets sing in high
Unceasing treble, welc'ming after day's
Cicada bray, while twilight's aura plays.
The sunset's rosy blush still lingers nigh;
Horizon's lit with crimson flush, as sky
Blends fading colours into deep blue's haze;
A killdeer distant cries as evening's grace
Descends so subtly, silence in its sigh.
A sprinkler's ticking nearby, while the dew's
Now poised quite daint'ly ev'rywhere and rests
On blades of grass and weeds, where'er I choose
To careless tramp in bare feet, it attests
That delicate wonder's thrill which imbues
Clear summer eves, with cool relief invests.
