CCIII
Sweet starry night! The frogs and crickets blend
Their voices in a steady chorus where
The aura of a lunar 'scape in fair
White chalky chill display all round extends
A welcome. With the ambiance these lend
The sable twinkling dome o'erhead's light e'er
Adds breathless awe; its grandeur vast and rare
With few compares, as this sphere it transcends.
As diamonds frozen in the depths of black
Unfathomed dark, so brilliant, sparkling slight
They shine in beauty; ev'ry star a crack
Of light, as in a curtain ever night,
Behind which none can see; invite, no lack
Of myst'ry in their charm, well-nigh excite.
