“High chaparral”
(the ballet of Juanita & Miguel)
It was down in ole’ Spanish Mexico a very long time ago
They told a story of loss & love it was a very sad tale
Her name was Juanita- a sweet seniority
She was a cutie- this Mexican beauty
From the top of her vail- to the tips of her toes
Her eyes were black diamonds- all sparkled and shinning
And her lips we’re as red- as the Mexican rose.
“They say she sings like an angel on the high chaparral”
Now she had a suitor- and he was her true love
He was a cowboy- his name was Miguel
He wore chaps and a big hat- and spurs that would jangle
When he rode the range- on the high chaparral
In the town of Punta Mina- in the cantina
The bandito “Carlito” -shot Juanita down
Miguel’s life was in tatters- his heart was shattered
He’s lost his true love- and he wants revenge
The angels were singing- the mission bells ringing
The precession- gave a blessing
Singing sad songs- as the shoveled earth fell
They buried Juanita- on the high chaparral
In the town of La Puerta- on the north border
Drinking tequila- and gambling for gain
It was the bandito -whose name was Carlito
Into the cantina- Miguel then came
Miguel eyed Carlito-and pulled out his pistol
Carlito was faster- a gun slinging master
He shot Miguel- and ended his pain
The angels were singing- the mission bells ringing
The precession- gave a blessing
Singing sad songs- as the shoveled earth fell
They buried Miguel- on the high chaparral
They say if you listen- at night at the mission
You can hear the love songs -Juanita sings to Miguel
“They say she sings like an angel on the high chaparral”
