The Poet

The Essence of Life

Da dum, da dum.

The constant beating of your drum.

Two by two it goes.

Speeds up and even slows.

The great muscle in your chest.

Provides blood and air through your breast.

The life force of all that is living.

The thing that keeps us moving and breathing.

What would we be without it?

An empty lifeless pit?

Or a body, waiting for a soul.

Or maybe, just maybe, it\'s something someone stole.

A souvenir for their journey.

An addition to their collection of no mercy.

All of us have one.

They can be heavy like a burden.

Or as light as a dainty butterfly.

Either way, the sound it makes is what life is.

It keeps beating, that\'s all it ever does.

Just like people, we keep beating and keep living.

We keep giving.

Forgiving.

Leaving.

Loving.

Missing.

Sinning.

Singing.

Dancing.

And just like the noise.

Life has its ups and downs.
