Sweetness, you are my weakness
And everything else; meaningless…
The world revolves around you.
Just when life had left me speechless,
Then along came you and so seamless
That I don’t know what I’d do…without you.
I
They say, “It’s better to have and hold,
Than to never,” and so we’re told,
“Take less and give more,
Always be careful when you explore,
And make sure to open every door;
And learn from lessons that came before…
Oh…and be mindful of war,
Keep the promises you swore,
And always be careful what you wish for.”
These, these were the bill of goods they sold,
From the open isles of an empty store
Over melodies sung in a pitchless roar,
That are mostly legend, slightly lore…
And become the great regrets which plague the old.
II
Still--quiet lies in silent countries,
And there’s no reason to be angry,
Now that we are one,
Above the glacial words of stone,
Words spoken in muted tones,
Muddled phrases that tend to drone;
No, that time has come and gone,
Conquered now and finally done,
As you and I…we are one.
For we found that it’s the simple things which make us happy;
That nothing in this world in owned,
And even life itself is loaned,
To be enjoyed and not atoned,
As you are my whole world, my one and only.
III
And you alone I share this treasured sack,
Let us promise ourselves to never look back,
Besides, there’s nothing there…
And even after all the ware,
That was quickly followed by the tare,
Which left our hands so raw and bare
I still can brush that strand of hair,
From your face, behind your ear
Freeing beauty boundless by compare.
So let us bask in what we have and not what we lack.
By this sun burst flare
That casts a light without a glare
As you are now everywhere,
In Ben, and in Kaiya, and of course in Jack.
So sweetness, my weakness
Everything else is now meaningless;
And as I watch you deep in sleep,
I wait for dawn to help me breach this
Nightly cloak that tries to keep us
Apart, and renew the only promise I’ll swear to keep.
