Ribbons

the chains you shackled around my ankles,

why’d you always insist they were ribbons?

like I was your neatly wrapped present

a beautiful surprise entangled with worth

awaiting to be eagerly torn open by a feverish child

but why didn’t anyone warn the child

i wasn’t what they wanted

that the evil that wrapped me

really trapped me

in a cage built of empty promises

insisting that these chains would bring beauty

it just took some pain

now the child sits next to me

and has somehow wound up chained

all because

you insisted

they were

ribbons.

pretty.

delicate.

ribbons.

-your fallacies have defeated me
