Moving Day

Moving Day

Leaving is hard and not easily done,
Empty each room, until there are none.
Fill the crates each marked for Goodwill,
Pack only those things you think matter still.

Make the rounds through hallway and room,
Dispersing what’s left with rag and with broom.
Turning the space to an unnatural state,
Its emptiness heavy against the locked gate.

Leaving is tricky, not easily won,
Accounting for all things except for the one.
The one thing you care about, the one thing you choose.
The one thing of all things you meant never to loose.

Leaving is difficult and can’t be undone,
Surrendering your heart the other has shun.
Surprised at the loneliness behind each of the doors,
Memories abandoned like dust on bare floors
