World War I
The war of attrition it was once called
A battle fought without any walls
Miles of trenches carved in the earth
Young soldiers ready to prove their worth
Rifles at the ready, bandoleers on top
Soldiers ready to fight if the enemy won\'t stop
Climb out of the trenches running to fight
Battles fought on day and night
Bombs exploding, machine guns firing
Screams in the distance, bodies caught in the wire
Trenches filled with scared young boys
Praying for the end of this horrible noise
Soldiers digging deeper in the ground
Hiding from the shells coming inbound
Explosions so loud your eardrum burst
Bodies falling, soldiers scared and hurt
Praying for the end of this fight over a piece of dirt
Thousands upon thousands of soldiers died
Fighting a battle no one knew why.
Soldiers prayed for salvation and just to go home
How the battle would end, no one could have known
