I can remember as a girl,
fearless places surrounding me.
Smiles so bright from faces new
to calm my worry easily.
I can remember as a girl
a freedom loose, emotionally,
contained by figures I know now
as ghosts who haunt and frighten me.
I can remember as a girl
my individuality,
a relaxed disciplinary,
to guide me through maturity.
I can remember as a girl
such fun with life’s virginity.
Exploring opportunity.
Finding my way quite happily.
I can remember as a girl,
childish games,
flared dresses that swirl.
Kick the can, catch the ball,
life wasn’t complicated at all.
But,
awareness came swiftly,
with puberty,
this girl running carefree,
lulled into a false security
I don’t remember ‘this’ world so vividly?
Eyes wide open,
now I see,
all the hatred in my world.
I wish now as an adult new I could remember as a girl.
