Crash

She is looking straight ahead.
I am looking at my phone.
Cars are rushing by us at illegal speeds.
The radio blared mainstream music.
I take a sip of my water and put the cup back.
I hear a ringing from her phone.
She takes her eyes of the road.
The second she answers the call, disaster strikes.
My world stops.
The impact is sudden and painful.
Inertia makes me fly forward.
My knee hits the dashboard.
She screams a crude word.
Water is everywhere, my cup bent.
I realize what happened.
The hyperventilation begins.
An ambulance comes rushing to us.
She says we are fine, but I’m not.
My knee is bruised and my heart even more so.
Cars rush by, not even noticing the crash.
My mom is making a call.
She is desperate for a ride.
My family is no where to be found.
We rely on her friend.
He picks us up in his car.
I hold on to the handle of the car.
I won\'t let go.
I can\'t let go.
Will I ever be able to let go?
