Without you

Without you
I bet you’re thinking
that I’m lost without you
like a puppy without its leash.
You held me by this leash you called love
and controlled me from the start:
where I went
and who I could see.
Who I could talk to
and who I could be.
When you’d come home
and I could finally see you
after months of being away,
I’d feel the same joy as dogs do.
All I wanted was your unconditional love and attention,
but you always had other people to see,
so you’d leave me at home for the night
until you’d finally come back to see me;
only to take me on a walk
when it was convenient for you.
And just as fast as you’d come,
you’d leave
and I was stuck sitting around
waiting for you to return again.
And even from so far away
you still held me by your leash.
Then everything changed.
You no longer wanted to hold the leash
so you let go
and sent me on my way
all alone.
Now,
I bet you’re thinking
that I’m lost without you
like a puppy without its leash
when in reality,
the leash was the only thing holding me back.
