Tune: Thornbury
(\'Thy hand, O God, has guided\')
Psalm 44 v.1-8
********
O God, we with our ears heard
Our fathers told the word
What works you did in times old
They them to us retold
How you did drive out heathen
Planted your people then
How you afflicted enemies
How cast out, each one flees
For our fathers possessed not
The land by human lot
Nor did their own sword or arm
Save them, keep them from harm
You showed them your arm, right hand
So they obtained the land
Showed light of your countenance
Your favour, your presence
Youa re my King, O God, sure
Command deliverance for
Jacob, your people Israel
So they your mercies tell
Through you will we all push down
Our enemies, each town
Through your name we will trample
Them down, tread on them all
For I will not trust my bow
My weapons, man\'s strength-show
Neither shall my sword save me
In the Lord my trust be
But you, Lord, from our enemies
Have saved us, our soul sees
In God we do boast all day long
Praise your name in our song
