Lonely Eyes

Everywhere I turn

I see sadness in lonely eyes

Questions we ask

Of what, where, how and whys

So many souls

Carrying the weight of pain

Years of emotional hurt

And tears that fall like rain

We hold ourselves

Prisoners of our past

Slowly moving forward

And going nowhere fast

One thing we’ve learned

Is ourselves to blame

Hidden in our past

Is from where it came

In growing up we’re told

Contradictions of love and hate

Who will be the one

To deal the hand of fate?

Only if one of us can you know

How deep go the roots of pain

So young it may start,

The conditioning of the brain

Take away our dignity

Strip us of natural pride

Push us into a corner

With shame we will hide

With smiles some of us

Might hold our own

Until depression sinks in

And makes us feel alone

In a crowded room

We look for the nearest door

Ironically by ourselves

We desperately need so much more

As I look around

From one stranger to the next

In their eyes I see they’re like me

Feeling as though they’ve been hexed

Before us a grim picture

With shared lonely eyes we see

Frowns outnumbering the smiles

A growing minority we’ve come to be

All we can do is

Be there for each other

With hugs and prayers

Like true loving Sister and Brother

With sympathetic heart

To my siblings of guilt I call

I want you to know

I understand you all
