Lessons Learned

When I was 8,

My grandpa took me,

To hear him preach,

I learned who God was.

When I was 9,

My grandpa cheated in goldfish,

By looking under the glass table.

I learned I won’t win every game.

When I was 10,

My grandpa took me golfing.

He let me hit the ball in the hole.

I learned I won’t be good at everything.

When I was 11,

My grandpa took me to a nursing home,

To play my flute for the residents.

I learned how to not take a single day for granted.

When I was 12,

I sat by my grandpa,

I watched him get skinnier and skinnier.

I learned what it felt like to be scared.

When I was 13,

I sat by my grandpa’s bedside,

until the day he decided to go home.

I learned what loss felt like.

Of all the lessons I learned,

The most important one was,

What is felt like to be loved.
