Play Ball
Elevated on the little mound
He stretched and strutted there around
With the ball in his hands
As he tried to take command
It was the first of the steps
Where the ball curved and leapt
To a hitter with his wood
In his stance and looking good
The umpires there called the plays
From strikes to balls to sliding safe
And announced “play ball” to the players
And the other umps and spectators
Coaches gave signs to the batters
While the other team made their chatter
With the understanding that with hits
The defense was out of position a bit
Fans really made the game
With empty stands not the same
With team owners understanding
Fans are good even when demanding
All-Star players got their votes
From the fans the admiring folks
And when the game was not played
It was a very boring day
