“She didn’t mean anything by it”
They never do it seems,
You don’t understand it hurts just a little bit
To know I can only be myself in my dreams
“Wow dating must be hard”
Really, I had no idea
How I have to keep up my guard
While telling them over my margarita
“I’m non binary, I am neither girl nor boy”
And they continue to misgender me
Use wrong pronouns, perhaps to annoy
But they don’t listen I guarantee,
“I like short haired girls”
“You mean people” say I subtly
“No I’m not gay” ah the truth unfurls,
They’re not okay with it, my company
“Can’t you just pick one”
Do you not understand how that feels
To hear those words said by someone
That is family over public meals?
“You gender doesn’t exist”
What? Oh you mean I’m a ghost!
I’ll haunt you if you still persist
Because that statement hurts most
I’ll tell you how it feels, for people like me
A drop in your stomach, a stab to your chest
Listen to my simple plea
Help me on my simple quest
Ask questions, I’m an open book
Don’t comment on something you don’t know
Ignorance is not something you overlook
I know Its difficult to understand though
You might hurt me, believe me it’s fine,
I know it’s hard but don’t create excuses
Like “cut me some slack” 2 years down the line
Being non binary comes with bruises
Hear my request,
I implore you and I’m sorry
Sometimes this will make me depressed
But it’s okay, it’s hard, you need not worry
