I wallow
in the shallowest mud
whenever I’m left in the bayou
toothy reptilian smiles chattering requiems for nothing
those terrible crocodiles
snapped the postman up
and now the pony express sinks deeper
a cry of anguish at midnight
driving the tank empty
chained cigarettes in a parking lot
it’s hard to say why i feel such sorrow
when my heart was never beating to begin with
I thought this corpse was alive, you see
but a zombie can’t write
it’s like I need to speed now
to hit ninety
or a hundred
or concrete
just to see where the car goes without me
a cardiac lane change
missing dead exits
the interstate goes on forever
through mountains and streams
beaten down canyons
and when the wind gets whipped up
trash rains from the sky
