coyote’s howl in red
stained green fields
I am colorblind and
colorless
pallid, truly
exsanguine
my blood leeches into
the soil and burrows
rotten deep
and the dogs don’t
even howl back
I have sought alabaster
and failed to see
value in my bronze
The patina of meadow
and dry cuts
turns my hair yellow
and my eyelids lighter
the bugs
all click
and whirr
on a windup night
cool misty drives around canals
I thought I’d stop
hanging around
ditches in the ground
but my riches have tarnished
lost fingers nailing coffins
there’s parts of me six feet under
it’s my sacrifice
to the earths foundry
that pulls lakes to chaos
and erects numbers
blood is
too curious to settle
it’s not water
and thicker means harder
my veins must be filled with pitch
the drop always comes
but never on time
