A Wood Changes
It was a fine little habitat
With saplings and meadow grass
A place for rabbits and quail
To hide as dogs ran past
The trees there slowly grew
To provide a bit of shade
And deer had acorns for food
At the edge where they stayed
The land became a forest
With trees mature and great
Where owls profited well
And where squirrels often played
Some men came along
With everything all cleared
Making landowners a little richer
Since the coal appeared
The stripped became a pasture
Where the land was reclaimed
With a pond stocked with fish
And cattle on the plain
