Paul Jones House

Portsmouth will you forget the man
Who helped to glorify thy name,
And guided to a foreign strand
Your ship, your flag, your fame?

Save for the Nation, and your own,
That house, a naval hero's house,
Within its wall John Paul Jones planned
Those victories won upon the foam.
Portsmouth, oh, favored Portsmouth, come
Arise and stay the untimely doom
Now hovering o'er a Nation's shrine.
And filling many a heart with gloom.

There is not gold enough to buy
Those rare historic houses you have,
To tear them down, or one destroy
Is sacrilege, most extremely bad.
