Rose Cake

Icing on a cake, so crafted and concepted

with roses crawling up its sides

delicate and full

All the way from a bakery

it's carried to a tablecloth

crowned in melting candles

On a plate of cardboard, taken outside

under the gazebo with all the people waiting

the sun passing slowly by

in front of the girl smiling

with incendiary eyes

and a whistle to snuff flame

into wishes and smoke

and birthday dreams

a lovely cake for a sweet sixteen.
