The Apple Story

Gregstarandgoff

Of all mans most amazing advance,
This famous one came from a moments chance.
A man of learning and sharp of mind,
Was not expecting what he did find.
When spying the shade of a nearby tree,
Sat unaware of what he would see.
For under the branches of ripening fruit,
An apples fall brings thoughts astute.
Striking heavy to his head came a swell,
But he realizes something in the way if fell.
Forgetting his bruises and all further remorse,
Expanding thoughts on this exciting new force.
Some say a truth and others a story,
Gravity was this mans greatest discovery.
Of all man's many amazing advance,
Comes a story telling of a moment's chance.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I have to say that back in my school days there was no real talk of ADHD or Dyslexia.\r\nI was always reading and loved to learn but struggled at school, I often wonder if I have some undiagnosed condition as get my letters wrong way and struggle a lot with writing. But I refuse to let it hold me back and aim to learn. My saving grace was the books I read and even the old sayings passed down by family. I still remember them and always wanted to write things that may inspire children and possibly help them in formative years. I wrote this as one of few poems aimed at helping children remember facts and history in later life.

It takes people with open minds to realise the facts that 'fall' before them. Good one Greg.

That kind comment was itself pretty poetic.

My learning has started in earnest...

Thanks for sharing a Great Poem Greg - in both Structure & Subject - GRAVITY ! Brian & I are both SCIENTISTS and we never take anything for granted - We always ask WHY ! When the APPLE dopped on NEWTONS HEAD He didnt just say B*G*E* and resolve to never sit under an AT again NO NO NO. Newton was a Scientist - So he asked three Questions :

    1. Why did it fall to the ground and stay there ?
    2. When it was loosed from the Branch - which held
it in place - why didnt it just stay there or move sideways ?
    3. Why didnt it move upwards ?

Newton reasoned that there was some force *GRAVITY* which
pulled every free object towards the centre of the EARTH and
& conferred WEIGHT on an object when you tried to lift it !
It is GRAVITY which confers limits on all Field Athletics and
not just the Skill of the ATHLETES !

Many important SCIENTIFIC discoveries have been made by CHANCE (serendipidy) because Scientists have investigated observed phenomena instead of disregarding it ! Examples are the Steam Engine (WATT) Radiation (BEQUEREL) Penecillin (FLEMMING) Mauve Dye (PERKIN) Stainless Steel - Polythene & Viagra. The History of Science & Technology is a very very fascinaing subjct !

Blessings & Peace to YOU & YOURS
    Love ANGELA & BRIAN 🧡💚🧡💚🧡

Thank you so much, glad you liked it.

People like you have made me feel so welcome. This is feeling like a great place to be able to share and open up, pleasant change from some places online that seem to judge and keep me on guard from sharing.

Wish you both a great Christmas and look forward to seeing the next year with new online friends like you both.

Hi, I had the same problem in my early years in school. I actually through a school book in some shrubs on the way home from school. I figured if I lost the book I wouldn't have to read something I could not understand, I was in third grade.
