His Gaze

KristenGreenCrabtree

His gaze

Scans over me

Searching for a barcode

Do I have the right dimensions

Do I coordinate

With the pleated drapes

hang other things too

A plastic calendar

The Kandinsky over the nightstand

My eyes don’t scan

You assume the way I look

I look for a man

    (a great write!
    insightful, direct
    and pitch perfect in tone
    thanks for sharing and inspiring
    my little scribbled reply)..
    indeed, society
    calls it 'fashion'
    when in actuality
it's just another way to dictate
    and subjugate our individuality..
    then comes those lurking
    insidious, subliminally poisonous
    whispers:
    'dressed like that
    she/he/they
    so, deserved it...'
    (meanwhile
    a few hours ago
    that unsuspecting individual
    was looking in the mirror
    hi-fiving themselves, mentally
    thinking
'worked so hard, to fit into this
can't believe we made it this far...')
    such a morbid world, reality
    can seem to be
best, not think about too deeply
it will steal what little joy we have
    in our lives...
