The Gods of Sydney Town.

David Wakeling

The day is gathering courage for the hostilities,
And the tanned men prepare for the possibilities,
Their curly blonde locks glisten in the morning light,
As Johnno and Peter don their uniforms for the fight,
It’s a dark blue singlet and shorts  and a pair of thongs,
Without a thought for the rights and wrongs,
The warriors prepare for the great rite of passage,
With a sandwich made with onions and a sausage,
Johnno  pulls the string on the mower but it never works,
That’s where Peter has to change the spark plug and other quirks
These are the Gods of Sydney who face the lawn,
With nothing more than a pair of thongs and a yawn.
They are gladiators proving their manhood,
Forgotten are the bashed wives and the screaming kids,
Forgotten are the drunken binges and the clashing of garbage bin lids,
Ever women looks to the sky with a frown,
Waiting and hoping for the sun to go down.
