"Let It Play"

marissaapril

The thing about a damaged record is, it still plays.

It'll be off key, out of tune and repeat, but it'll play.

When you hear the same thing over and over again, it either clings to your thoughts and you become accustomed to it or it destroys the beautiful sound you once heard.

Our voices crack. They waver, and they become horse and dry.

Our bodies become condemned houses that used to be homes and inside is a record player that plays the same sad song.

We start to disintegrate. Fading into the melody and quiet hum of a needle on scratched plastic.

Continuing to skip over the happiest tunes.

We dance to the crackle of static and spin through the motions, listening to the echo of a hollow heart.

I think it's time we created new sounds.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Inside these words are messages hidden with all different meanings. The most important being that we are not our past mistakes. We have time to grow and to strive for more than what were told is in our reach. Our happiness is held within our hands but does not come easy. You have to want it. You have to create it.

WELCOME MARISSA - Thanks for posting such a haunting first poem ! Like an old scratched 78 it crackles with the passage of time but in the last line it encourages us to create new sounds ! I'm 33 so i'm old enough to have seen and heard 78's at my Grannies and also old enough to have gathered a few cracks and scratches ! I love the message of the poem that the mistakes of the past can too easily define us - we can all be "digitally remastered" eliminate the "damage" and be reborn (rereleased !) as something new and beautiful ! I'm only a third of the way through my life (33) but you elegant poem and your comment has given me a new horizon ! Thanks for caring - Yours BRIAN

I stopped dancing to my crackle. I just stand and stare at my record player because I'm tired of kicking it.. it won't stop playing! Great poem. It creates good imagery
