"Five Accidents Later"

marissaapril

She had clung to my body and begged me to fix what couldn't be undone.

She ruptured my ear drum and almost broke my wrist.

"I'm so fucked up, I can't drive home."

She pulled my hair as I tried to hold hers back.

She had dirt on her hands and red rimmed tired eyes.

"How do you help someone who's so fucking sad?"

She reeked of booze and stale smoke from the bar.

she fell more than once. Stumbling over her feet and her messy thoughts.

"I can't take it. But I'll take the pain away, I'll take it all."

On the way back home, I drove past the place that you took your last breath.

Mine hitched and there was a ping of pain in my chest.

"How do you live, when the ones you love are dead?"

  • Comment from author about the poem: This is a scene that took place in my driveway 11 months ago due to the loss of someone important to our family who was only 17. My sister begged god to take her instead because she couldn't stand to see the heartache eat away at everyone.

Heartbreakingly great poem! I can feel the emotions, the sadness in you for your sister and her pain.
