Who am I?

Antoinette

I've scanned the names ferociously.

All the people who came before me,

All the people who struggled and fought for me to survive

Before I even lived.

I learned it all, viciously.

In need to discover who I was,

Before I was anything that breathed

Before my heart began to beat.

And I was so proud.

So proud to know that

Despite the horrors in this world I came

To live.

But I can't say that around you.

You're always telling me how I'm nothing more

That a mixture of things that all come together to make

One...Thing.

I am not an undefined omelette!

I will not stay shackled to ignorance!

Why do you not accept the fact that this heritage has been passed down

In generations? Until it arrived to me.

I love it but you don't want me to to love it.

I don't understand why.

So tell me? Who the fuck am I?

What am I?

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem really means a lot to me. I've invested so much time into being proud of who I am and being able to say that I come from this country and those are my people and I care about them. I fell a strong connection to these places and yet this connection seemed to be severed by a woman I am supposed to look up to. She told me this very morning that I am nothing more than British, which isn't a bad thing at all and I am proud to have been born in Britain but I am so much more and I don't want to be labelled as British when I have not a single ancestor who was truly British. I don't understand why it is okay for some to be proud of their heritage but not for me. I just don't understand. Is it because I'm mixed? Who knows.

You are whomever you want to be. Don't live in the dark. Come on out, and you'll find yourself. It takes a while, but you will find yourself.

You are what you want to be. No one can change that or deter it. It is your choice. what you are or what you become is wholly a personal choice. Let no one put you aside because of your heritage. It is what it is and will not change. Embrace your family history. Do with it what you will. It is the tree of life to which you are a branch. Brilliantly expressed in your poem. Loved it. - Phil A.
