Captain Twilley

Nicholas M. Langford

As I got bored

Of the whale on stage,

My eyes began to wander.

Across the aisle

Is where they roamed,

And fell upon another.

Alone she floats

On ocean of blue:

A Captain -

By the name of Twilley.

Transcendent gaze,

Inquisitive mind,

Irresistible confidence.

A girl of dreams

How perfect it would be

To cherish -

Someone like Twilley

She had to leave,

My lovely Captain,

To the coast of Mary's land.

And now I ache

For what could have been,

With my sweetest -

Captain Twilley.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I wrote this poem in a lecture hall packed with cadets in their dress blues uniforms. We were at Maxwell AFB for summer training and I was lucky enough to meet and spend time with this amazing girl. She stood out so beautifully amongst our identical uniforms. We eventually has to leave to return to our respective states.

A lovely, sad, tribute to what might have been. Well done, Nick!
