Calming the Storm (Free Verse)

The Artist Known As sVn (Se7en)

Have you ever had this feeling in your gut. One that can’t be explained, but there is this burning sensation that burns to the core? It feels like a fire has been set inside of you and you’re clueless on how to put it out. Everyone has had this feeling at some point in their life but not all feel the same pressure that comes with it. Rather if it’s because of something that was said or not said, or something that needs to be done and it’s just not getting completed. It’s never a good feeling. In all actuality, anything can trigger this sensation. You’ll think of a situation that may be bothering you, regardless if it should or not, and it feels as if it’s eating you alive and pulling you into a black hole. Stuck in the moment, you don’t know what to do, but you feel overwhelmed, pressured, anxious and you feel like a stranger in your own body. All you want is to feel free like a bird that just spread its wings to soar through the sky for the first time but that’s not the case.

The clear vision that you once had is now blurred due to the mind being clouded with problems that have simple and easy solutions. Sometime as simple as letting go. It’s easier to over think, and once you’ve over thought the situation, it causes you to create thoughts that are unrealistic but in the moment, you don’t see it for what it really is. Those unrealistic problems that are being imagined seem so real during a time of weakness. Anger may build up and take over in the process. Why? Because you are trying to figure out everything at once and with there being so many different alternatives to choose from, you lose sight of the task at hand and it takes a major toll on you both physically and mentally. It angers you because you’ve grown impatient to whatever is going on in your life and you begin to take out all these emotions on things and people around you. These emotions you pour out are unintentional but controlling them may seem harder to do than think about. You’ll walk around mentally frustrated which causes you to be blinded by the negativity you produced for yourself.

All you want is to see the light at the end of the tunnel, breathe refreshing oxygen and feel free within yourself yet you feel so enclosed, helpless, and afraid. Seeing the future feels impossible because  you can’t put the problems aside and look at the bigger picture. Your hands are clenched so tight that when you finally let go of the problem, it looks as if your fingers cut through the skin and penetrated through the back. The relief of letting go is great feeling. It’s like being underwater, not knowing how to swim, and someone dives in to save you. Feeling the air rush into your body! Feeling the blood run through your veins! It's a relief and a sign of things getting better.

Some things are hard to let go. No matter if it’s friends, family, situations you’re involved in or simply words. But, it's the strength within you that says “I can do this”. For every time you told yourself no, just believe in your heart that IT CAN BE DONE. For every negative thought, there is a positive one to triumph over it. For every reason you want to quit, there are reason why should keep pushing. But first, the heart must be sincere and strong enough to strive to success.

In order to get to the top, there are several levels of stairs you must climb. No one said it’ll be easy and trust me, it’s going to hurt! You’ll want to quit, but remember and remind yourself that you CAN do it. There is no time to give up on yourself and roll around in self-pity. Remove those negative thoughts for they produce nothing but a headache and unwanted stress. Putting in time, effort and having a bold sense of will power helps heals the mind to be stronger and produce a positive outcome on life. The possibility of you defeating your flaws are huge; but it has to be something you really want for yourself. Now the question is, are you ready?

  • Comment from author about the poem: I wrote this piece during a time of uncertainty. I felt as if nothing was going to get better. I didn't know how to release the negative feelings I had brought upon myself. So I decided to pick up my pen and express myself differently. I'll say it definitely helped release bottled up emotional I was holding onto at the time!
