Just A Dot On The Map

People don’t know about the dark shit that goes on in this town.

We let them think we’re happy and doin well, while we’re really burning it to the ground.

People come here and get trapped there’s no way out,

This place drowns you and fills you with doubt,

You come here and I promise you, you’re fucking hell bound.

This place is full of anger, regrets, and hate.

There’s nothing to do so the kids fill their plate, with drugs, sex, and a side of strong booze,

You touch all that shit then you’re destined to lose.

No one here is going anywhere that I guarantee,

I’m sorry but people need to know the harsh reality.

Some people know, how this place eats you alive,

The people are sick and the rumors are true I’ve come to realize;

Pregnant at 12, he raped her all night

He beat her then drugged her, it wasn’t her fight.

No one heard the screams, she couldn’t breathe,

She begged the lord every night to help her climb to her feet.

Then there was the kid, that drown in his puke,

Everyone loved him, his death was a fluke

Overdose they said and he was 15,

We went to his funeral and listened to his drugged up momma scream,

No one looked down on her, nobody stopped her rants,

We just cried our silent tears, kept our heads bent.

Our good friend is in jail for something he didn’t do,

It was the drugs inside of him, he lost his fight too.

16 year old girl, she just killed her self, the bullying was too bad and nobody would help.

The grandma that was kidnapped and thrown on the road, she died later that night,

They used too much chloroform.

These people are violent, they take things they don’t deserve,

Girls here compete against each other, their pillhead moms won’t teach them how to preserve.

The boys use then throw, DUIs every night,

They’re beating up cops, the drugs tell them it’s right.

“Keep going,

Punch harder,

Get back up and run” but when they’re in custody the drugs decide to end the fun.

Handcuffed and bloody, smile on their face,

It only lasts a second, they’re then marked a disgrace,

Before thrown into jail and they just don’t come back, too many fuck ups that they can’t retract,

Their parents don’t even get a chance to react, sobriety lasts 15 minutes for them that’s a damn fact.

Everyone here hates their life, they cry every night,

Trust me I know I tasted the other side, I just got a bite,

Before this place pulled me in, there’s always someone to help, or a fight to try to win.

But the real winner here in misery, he bathes in our grief,

The day the world ends, will be this towns relief.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I wrote this poem a long time ago but it still holds a lot of truth to it. I’d just lost my bestfriend to an overdose and it was a painful reminder that the small town that I lived in only brings misery and hopelessness. I’ve not been back there since I moved to Illinois and I never plan on returning.

This is sad. I hope there's some joy in your life. This town sounds really bleak.
