Scarlet Tanager

Scarlet Tanager

Little scarlet in the canopy

I know you’re perched up there

Obvious and where I can see

You calling everywhere

There in the plentiful shade

You are high and free

And when i get too close

You fly away from me

The breeze does not blow

While you are in the woods

And the trees are ones you know

And contrast with you good

I treasure seeing your flaming red

Against the dark green leaves

And the cardinal also shines

But not as bright as thee

And somehow you disappear

To another mighty oak

Hidden in the foliage there

Until your scarlet shows
