Death penalty

Sup

Does the death penalty deter the evil?
Or will the good do good and the bad navigate towards the illegal?
Should the punishment fit the crime no matter how chilling?
To some, the death penalty is still murder, just legalised killing.

An execution stops a sinner from committing another crime,
But an innocent person can be wrongly convicted and lose precious time.

A victims pain may ease when the punishment is execution,
Although a life long prison sentence seems like stronger retribution.

Are you for or against capital punishment?

Sup, your poetic words present us with a dilemma. You've given us the food for thought, but we must be the ones to digest it and offer an opinion. That's hard for some of us.

I was for the death penalty decades ago, then after having taken a course in Criminology, visiting a Federal prison in New York and speaking with inmates, I changed my mind. Some prisoners were chronic liars, some were childlike, some were hardened criminals, but there were also some who, in fact, framed.

DNA is not always conclusive. So, what happens if an innocent person is killed in error? I know I couldn't live with that weight on my heart.

And from a religious perspective we must honor the words of the Almighty: "Vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord."

Having said that I would probably not advocate for capital punishment, but neither do I believe hardened criminals should lead a life of Riley either.

    Great poem! 🙂

Thank you! You raise several good points which I didn’t think about, I think the cons outweigh the cons although I tried to come across as neutral.

Yes, you have a great point, Sup. I value your opinion.

Keep up with your writing and I'll keep reading your poems and commenting on them. Sorry I let my chemistry background influence my reply on your first poem. 🙂
