under amplified concern

Jon Nakapalau

under amplified concern

you told me how the world
was winding down

like a broken toy abandoned
by a bored child

who had been so sure
in certain pleasure

there could no longer be any reasoning
in a season of cold indifference

and fate had left
us all to each other

in stillness against a horizon
that glowed molten cinnamon

in this there was a tide
that seemed to flow faster

then collective hearts beating
like caged birds breaking their wings in spite

never to fly past horizontal banding
it all seems so shallow

when shadows drown your last days.
